In the winter of 2005 we were gifted a 5 gallon home brewing starter kit. We put on white science lab coats and put the huge brew pot on an apartment stovetop. A few hours later and we had melted several of the knobs on the stove top, left a wooden spoon in the boil for half an hour and had managed to produce 5 gallons of pale ale that had a color that would be better fit for a stout. Undeterred, we pitched the packet of dry yeast and hoped for the best. A few weeks later we put the “black pale ale” that we had affectionately called The Dirty Spoon in bottles and waited. When we finally got to open the first bottle, it actually tasted like beer! A new obsession was born. Pipe Dream was founded by two friends, Kingsley Toby and Brian Holter.
